Henley Festival 2008 - summary…
Well, another great evening at Henley Arts Festival. I had a lot of fun.
Well, another great evening at Henley Arts Festival. I had a lot of fun.
Every year there is something interesting on in the Dome at the Henley Arts Festival. This year it was The Bikini Beach Band with the Hula Honeys.
One of the great things about Henley Arts Festival is you never know what you are going to see (well, I suppose that may not be true, if I read the programme I might know….), and every year you get a surprise. This years surprises were the Junkanoo Backline Carnival Band and The Bikini Beach Band with the Hula Honeys.
One of the highlights of the Henley Arts Festival for me is the fireworks. These are always great, and every year seem to upset some one in the town.
The Henley Festival site is BIG, and there is a lot going on.
The week after Henley Royal Regatta the site by the river is used to host Henley Arts Festival. I enjoy both the regatta and the festival, and although they are on the same site, they are so different.
The festival is a 5 day event and starts on the Wednesday after the regatta finishes.
Nick has sent in a review of the Three Tuns:
“I have passed the Three Tuns a couple of times recently (a Saturday lunchtime and early on a Sunday evening) and noticed that the door was shut. This evening (Tuesday before regatta) I decided to visit the Tuns for a beer and it was WEIRD! At first, from the street, I couldn’t tell is the pub was open as there seemed to be no lights on, and no one at the bar. I then realised that there were two people in one corner, and that was it - TWO customers at 9 pm in the evening (and on the day before the regatta started). I went in and it was disappointing. The back bar was completely closed and in darkness (no idea if it is now used at all), the front bar felt cold, damp and unwelcoming, and also smelt of wet dog. The beer was VERY pricey, but in reasonable order. What has happened to the Tuns? It used to be one of the busiest pubs in the town, with a good restaurant trade, and now it seems to be drifting, which is a shame as it is in a prime location in Henley and is a pub/building with some great character and history. Could this be the next pub in Henley to close?”
Nick has sent in a review of the The Angel on the Bridge:
“Popped in to the Angel on the Bridge for a pint on regatta Friday. The place was packed, but I got served quickly (for ‘full’ bar service you had to use the upstairs bar as the bar by the river only had a limited selection of drinks). I had one pint of Brakspears, which was OK, and then they ran out of beer! Unbelievable. A pub running out of beer during the regatta (and it wasn’t a particularly busy regatta). All-in-all a lively and fun atmosphere, a bit pricey, but all spoilt by a lack of real ale!”
Nick has sent in a review of the The Bird in Hand:
“Popped in to the Bird in Hand a few times over the Regatta and this pub just gets better and better. The beer was great (London Pride) and the pub was busy. Spent one evening sitting out in the garden drinking beer and watching the Swallows fly and dive overhead, magic. A great pub, and I was pleased (delighted) to discover that it has won the South Oxfordshire CAMARA pub of the year award for the second time (The Bird last won it in 2006). Great stuff!”
