"I regularly entertain clients at Loch Fyne, and also dine there with friends. My visits are now into double figures and I can express 100% satisfaction with lunchtimes when it is less busy, and 75%+ with evenings.

It provides a valuable alternative to the proliferation of pizza/pasta places in Henley." - Barty July 2001

"I have just read a review for the Loch Fyne restaurant at Market Place on Henley on Thames and cannot believe it. I was looking up the Loch Fyne website to try and locate the number so we could re-book having had the most amazing meal in June when I read this review.

I went along with friends who live in Henley following an article in the Saturday Telegraph and they had also mentioned that this new restaurant had opened in the otherwise restaurant free zone of Henley.

Anyway, when we first went in we were greeted by a very friendly girl who showed us straight to the table the waitress had menus which she gave to us whilst she was seating us.

Within about 2 minutes and despite the fact that the restaurant seemed to be filled with half of Henley, we were asked if we would like to order drinks or anything from the wine list - which is conveniently on the back of the menu. We opted for the dry white wine which had been labelled for Loch Fyne and it was very good - especially with my succulent oysters and my companions mussels and smoked salmon starters which we ordered about 20 minutes after sitting down.

For the main courses two shared the seafood platter, one had the fish pie and I had turbot which was on the specials board. My only disappointment was that the seafood platter arrived before my meal and although the turbot was very good the initial glimpse of this lovely big platter of fresh fish arriving made me regret not having ordered it!

Coffee finished off the meal and we went out into Henley, which was dead apart from the lively atmosphere we had left behind at the Loch Fyne Restaurant. We are back in Henley in two weeks time and I cannot wait to share a seafood platter.

Sorry Nick from May but I cannot wait to go back!!!"- Jae, July 2001

"I have just read the review written by Nick of the Loch Fyne restaurant on Market Place and must say I am really surprised hen had such an unfortunate time.

My Wife and I recently spent a wonderful long weekend in Henley. During the course of the weekend we visited some of the lovely pubs in the area and celebrated our wedding anniversary by enjoying a super meal in the Loch Fyne restaurant. Quite apart from the excellent food and wine the thing that made the experience so enjoyable was the extremely attentive and knowledgeable staff that served us.

Perhaps Nick visited on a bit of an off night, but I must say I wish we had a restaurant of this quality in our village.
Thanks"- Gavin, July 2001

"Not the best service in town!

The restaurant is located in the Market Place next door to NatWest Bank. In previous years the property has housed a number of antique shops and at one time had Henley Jazz Cafe in the back section. In the mid-forties the building housed a bakery.

The conversion of the interior has been carried out in a very sympathetic manner. The restaurant looks nice and has a pleasant atmosphere. However, unfortunately, that is the good news.

We arrived at 8 pm for a booking of 8:30. At 8:30 we were taken through to our table. The restaurant was busy.

At 8:50 we finally received the menus. It was almost impossible to attract the attention of the staff and they seemed to be reluctant to take our order.

Finally the drinks arrived. The first bottle of wine was corked and after some discussion with the staff the bottle was exchanged.

The starters arrived one at a time and the majority of the now very hungry party had finished their food before all the starters had been served. The final starter would never have arrived if we hadn't chased it up!

The main course arrived at 10:30. TWO HOURS AFTER WE HAD SAT DOWN. Again, there was a problem with all the food arriving at the same time and again missing items had to be chased up. No one on the table could work out who had ordered the green beans and the staff did not know. It later became apparent that it was the vegetable of the day! How did the staff not know this?

We finished the meal at 11 pm. It then took the staff 15 minutes to produce the bill, and another 10 minutes to produce the rest of the bill! As we were a party of over 6 a 10% service charge was added. Needless to say, this was not paid!

Overall, the experience was not good. The food was slightly over priced and nothing special. As one of the party commented 'I could have cooked that at home in less time'. The 'wait staff' worked hard but were let down by management failing to organise sufficient staff for a restaurant of that size. If the place last beyond Christmas 2001 I will be surprised. The word is bound to get out.

Not recommended!" - Nick, May 2001
